Birth Control

FAQs About Birth Control in Hoffman Estates, IL

Whether this is your first time considering birth control or you’ve tried other methods in the past, there are several factors involved in determining the right birth control option for you.  Our Northwest Associates for Women's Healthcare physicians want you to understand all of your options so you can make the decision best suited for your health and lifestyle.  Here are some of the top questions about birth control.

How does birth control work?

Hormonal birth control methods prevent ovulation, making it unlikely for the egg to attach to the uterus for fertilization.  While there are many methods of birth control, pills are still the most popular contraceptive method.  The pill, as well as other hormonal methods, release estrogen and progestin to stop the egg from fertilizing.  The pill also thickens the lining of the uterus making it more difficult for sperm to reach the egg.

What are the different types of birth control?

There are many different types of birth control pills.  You may choose from combination pills that offer both estrogen and progestin or progestin-only pills.  Women who are sensitive to estrogen may choose to take progestin-only pills (also known as mini-pills).

Other birth control methods include:

  • Vaginal ring
  • Dermal patch
  • Intrauterine device (IUD)
  • Sub-dermal implant
  • Condoms
  • Spermicides
  • Fertility awareness

What are some common side effects of hormonal birth control?

  • Nausea
  • Spotting
  • Breast tenderness
  • Weight gain
  • Mood changes
  • Decreased libido
  • Vaginal discharge
  • Headaches

If any of these side effects are affecting your quality of life it’s important that you talk to your gynecologist right away to discuss whether a different birth control option may be more suitable for you.

Which method of birth control is right for me?

There are many factors to consider when determining the best birth control method for you.
For example, women who don’t want to get pregnant for several years may choose to get an IUD.  Some women who may be less likely to remember to take a pill every day at the same time may opt for the implant, patch or vaginal ring.
The best way to make an informed and healthy decision is to schedule an appointment with your gynecologist.
